Nawaz Sharif, of the Pakistan Muslim League has won the election here. The tiger is the symbol for his party. Almost all of the political posters were taken down the following day. It’s still to early to see the effect this will have on Pakistan- American relations but there is a cautious optimism here. This election marks the first transition between civilian governments in the nation’s 66-year history and despite the risks of voting there was a sixty percent turnout at the polls.
A few nights ago I went to the Imran Khan rally. Some of the young people here tell me that he modeled his campaign after Obama in the way that he harnessed social media. Khan is a national cricket hero who played in the world cup. Big thanks to Shazia and friends for accompanying me into the rally. We only made a brief visit in and out of the mass gathering before the crowds reached their peak. There were eighty thousand people in attendance.
